Homofonik

Biography

With sounds rooted in big, infectious pop choruses and a flair for theatrics, Edmonton’s queer pop duo Homofonik turns heartbreak into bops, and joy into catchy, euphoric bubblegum pop. The duo, a collaboration between long-time friends Josh Travnik (vocals) and Daniel Belland (keyboards), draws influence from the dance-forward heartbreak pop of artists like Carly Rae Jepsen, Robyn, Years & Years, and Troye Sivan.

We have a clearer sense of the kind of music we want to make. Not being able to play the shows that we wanted to play because of the pandemic has only made us ache for live shows more.
— Dan Belland

It’s no accident that their music evokes the community and energy of queer spaces — Homofonik’s brand of electropop is deliberately full of the queer representation that they never saw growing up. Embracing their love of pop maximalism combined with personal experiences and relatability, Homofonik is ready to bring the dancefloor to your living room.

We’re writing songs for the kind of experiences that we wish we could have right now and living vicariously through our music,
— Josh Travnik

Test Drive

Queer pop duo Homofonik release Test Drive, an 80s-inspired electropop track evoking neon summer nights and recalling the feeling of late-night car rides laced with romantic potential. What begins as a coy summer fling builds into something more as sparkling synths and dynamic vocals drive the song forward with a relentless urgency. Produced by Father Bobby Townsend (Laur Elle, Talltale) and Randor Lin (Ten Second Epic) and written by Homofonik and Talltale.

TASTE

Queer pop-dance duo Homofonik release their debut single “Taste.” Produced by Father Bobby Townsend and Randor Lin of Velveteen Audio, and distributed by Believe Music.

Inspired by the thrill of the chase, “Taste” is a euphoric dance-pop track that combines sparkling synths, dancefloor-ready beats, ear candy, flirty lyrics, and big pop vocals that are sure to deliver the exciting end-of-the-summer energy boost you didn’t know you were craving.

SMOKE AND MIRRORS

Embracing the camp of the Halloween season through a contemporary pop lens,  queer dance-pop duo Homofonik release “Smoke and Mirrors,” the title track from their upcoming dark and autumnal EP. Propelled by driving basslines, unearthly synths, and chilling music-box ear candy, “Smoke and Mirrors” is a haunting track that explores a relationship pushed to the brink of destruction.

I Know you all over again

Edmonton-based queer pop duo Homofonik reimagine Trixie Mattel's acoustic country-folk ballad “I Know You All Over Again” into a synth-pop crying-on-the-dancefloor track, trading acoustic guitars for '80s inspired synths and drums. With lyrics evoking the nostalgia of a past relationship and queer heartbreak set to explosive electronic production, the song builds on Homofonik’s reputation for crafting euphoric high-energy dance-pop.
